Pop-Up Workshops - A Mini Series of Art Workshop

South East Los Angeles Area (SELA)

The Latinas Art Foundation hosts Pop Up Art Workshops for the community for multiple and interconnected purposes, including cultural awareness, to provoke the discussion of art and culture as they intersect with themes of sustainability and culture. The Latinas Art Foundation will coordinate dates and locations with the participating locations within the South East Los Angeles area.

Pop Up Art takes place in an outdoor or Indoor space in different cities within South East Los Angeles. Pre-registration is recommended to participate to allocate the correct amount of supplies needed.

La Vaquereada:

Paramount, CA

La Vaquereada is created to celebrate all of the artistic beauty within each culture. It is a form to interexchange culture through the arts. Cultural art simultaneously provides a link to the past, a personal connection to identity, and a powerful platform for people of color today. Empowering and providing Education and Exposure to cultural awareness, especially through arts, gives the community the powerful voices they need. Together we can engage the community and provide an opportunity where they can gain insight into the history of others; create a sense of identity, and belonging. We hope you will have lots of fun during the festival.

“La Vaquereada” is an event with performance opportunities, community gathering, learning the history of the vaquero life and to expose and educate the community to cultural folk dances from Latino America. Dancers and community members from all over are invited to participate in the largest Calabaceado (the traditional dance of the fiesta vaquer0) performance in the Los Angeles county area. Participants will learn a Calabaceado choreographed by Prof. Juan Gil Tadeo Martinez from Baja California Tijuana Mexico. This event is free to all participants. 

Xantolo, Dia De Los Muertos:

Paramount, CA

Xantolo (Dia de los Muertos celebration) is a sacred festival that links people to their ancestors, the community comes to enjoy performers of all ages dancing along the streets at a plaza wearing elaborate costumes. Día de Muertos is well known all around the world as one of the most colorful and interesting Mexican festivities. However, not many know the deeper, truer version of it, the Xantolo. The Xantolo event is an outdoor art walk event at Progress Park Plaza in the City of Paramount. Members of the community and surrounding cities can take a stroll in the park and view the handmade cultural artwork made by community members and local artists. Visual artworks will include community altars, dia de los muertos arts & craft kits and community art work displayed. . Artists and community members build alter to celebrate life and death. The alters, temporary statutes, paintings and colorful decorations in the plaza are left on exhibition. Xantolo is a celebration that represents the link that joins humans with nature, ancestors and projects them as a link between the present and future generations. It is an intimate moment and time where families and neighbors share food, games, memories and unite and strengthen the concept of family. It strengthens the concept of unity, cooperation and coexistence.  

Paramount Art Contest

Pararmount, CA

The Annual Paramount Art Contest is for Paramount Unified School District Students and Paramount Residents who are interested in celebrating their artistic talents. This contest is designed to encourage the promotion of culture, creativity, and individuality.

Art contests can be a great way to develop confidence, provide a stepping stone into an artistic career, and allow for artistic self-expression. Community members will get a chance to showcase their work in their own supportive community, in front of an esteemed jury, and gain recognition for their talent. Art encourages new ways of thinking, celebrates individual thought, and celebrates diversity.

 

SELA Festival

To become a participant on the Latinas Art Foundation stage during the SELA Arts Festival, fill out the form to request to perform. Applications begin March 2022 and end May 2022. Filling out the application does not guarantee a secure spot on the lineup.
